The Melbourne Gangland War (1998-2010) resulted in 30+ murders some of these murders have never been solved. Lawyer X represented many offenders who were charged in connection to these murders. Purana Task Force had been formed to stop the Melbourne Gangland War and faced increasing media and -political pressure to bring the killings to an end-but at what cost! Unbeknownst to her clients Lawyer X was also a registered police informant for the Purana Task Force.
Drawing on qualitative data this paper will explore the choices Lawyer X and Purana Task Force made as they attempted to end the Melbourne Gangland War via questionable means. Additionally this paper will also discuss the legal and ethical consequences for Lawyer X, the Criminal Justice System and the many victims of the decisions Lawyer X and Purana Taskforce Force made- including those who have died or are behind bars because of unethical and possible corrupt practices.
